Interesting Ward

So, Brem Brem is an interesting place.. It's kind of a beat up, run-down, and tired town. The city planners are trying to revitalize the downtown, but with the economy being the way it is, it's slow and the people here are trying to resist change..

The first time I drove through Brem Brem was to my first job interview at the hospital. I was like uh wow... this is kind of ghetto. It's a gorgeous area, but the town itself is run-down.. with a lot of public housing units... you know--the "projects". So yeah, there's a lot of low-income people and military people. Let's just say it--a lot of white trash.

We live in the part of Brem Brem that has a lot of the low-income housing units, so our ward is quite interesting. We have rich people that have lakefront houses, low-income people, elderly people, and some young people who just started working at the shipyard as engineers. There are a lot of elderly people in our ward, which isn't a bad thing, but most of them are in Relief Society because the younger women are in other callings. So, us young ones in RS sit there while the rest of the women laugh at "old people humor".

The reason why I bring this up is because when I first got into the ward, they found out that I work full-time... which I didn't think was a big deal.. until they asked me if I'd have enough time to do visit teaching. Uh yeah, duh.. I work a normal 40-hour workweek and I don't have kids.

So, I just got a calling as assistant ("to the") secretary in RS. I got an email about weekly RS presidency meetings, and they were worried that I wouldn't be able to go to meetings because I "work long hours".

Wtf? I'm thinking that a working LDS woman must be quite rare here in good ol Brem Brem.

I think working LDS women are rare anywhere.... Well at least LDS moms. What do the women do before they have children? I don't understand....

Try being an LDS working mom. Andrea got so many surprise looks and under the breath comments when other women found out she worked and had a child.

Diddo what my hubby said. I actually have a lot more to say but with all the blog stalking that goes on these days I thought it best not to say anymore.

I wonder if I still know anyone in that ward. Are there any Meyers, Sommers or Arthurs there?

That's really funny. Assistant "to the" secretary made me laugh. I can't wait for The Office to start again. Are you the only one with a job in your RS? I guess that could explain the low income housing (?).

I think that's kind of interesting. It seems like in our low-income area/ward the problem is that EVERYONE works and no one has time. I guess most of the old people don't, but everyone under 70 works. I am in YW and I'm the only one who doesn't work. I'm interested to hear the discussion on working LDS moms. I think there is NOTHING wrong with being a working mom. I really miss working and being involved in my profession and my job. I totally plan on going back to work when my kidlets are a little more independent (aka in some kind of school). Anyway, it's always kinda of interesting being in a ward like that. Hope you end up enjoying it!

I'm kind of wondering what "old people humor" is. That is odd about having enough time. With my ward it's understood to do at least VT and then a calling too. However, now there are so many of the stay at home moms (yes, there are LOTS in my ward) wanting to visit people at night and themselves visited during the day that the night routes only have 1 person to visit. Easy. Why does the RS secretary need an assistant? We have a very large ward and NO assistant.

Our ward is similar situation. We have everything from trailer parks to mansions. Also. I am the "Special Assistant to the Relief Society Presidency." And I can totally relate to the "old people humor" thing.

I'm guessing they're used to any working mom around there working odd/long hours to help keep up with the bills. But with having no children to care for, why would they expect you to stay home?

I may get something part-time once the kids are in school. That's years away. Right now I would be paying money for the "opportunity" to work!

New home blog coming soon

I have received a lot of questions via email about how the home is holding up for the past 2.5 years. I plan to do a detailed update on our ...
